Talking About God and Money

The purpose of this resource is to engender frank and open conversation about money, within the context of belief in God and commitment to the way of Jesus Christ. It is a part of LifeCycles, a larger program designed to help empower all Christians to live their baptismal ministry, so its structure begins with building community and then moves into exercises to help participants discern their values about money and how it is used.

Groups work through the following six sessions:

Session Themes:

1. Wealth  helps participants identify their early experiences of money as a gift or a reward.
2. God’s Covenant  explores the experiences of giving money or other gifts in the context of that Covenant.
3. Laborers in the Reign of God discusses early memories of earning money in the light of the parable of the laborers. 
4. Investing in the Reign of God  identifies the earliest lessons learned about money and explores their meaning within the context of the parable of the talents.
5. Lavish Gifts of Love  invites participants to remember experiences of giving gifts and explore what gift-giving might mean in the light of the story of the woman with the jar of nard.
6. Review and Celebrate offers opportunities for reflection on this unit.  

  Use this resource to kick off a stewardship campaign, to help a stewardsh  ip group to define a vision for stewardship in your congregation, or simply to help those interested in theology of money to develop one.

Six 2-21/2 hour sessions that can be used with adult groups; with some adaptation, may be used with high school age youth.
