Searching for God in the Rubble of Haiti
This program is designed to assist youth groups in talking about disasters, such as the recent earthquake in Haiti. When disasters occur, many people wonder why did God allow this to happen and some even wonder if God caused it to happen. Others are confident that God doesn’t cause earthquakes, but they don’t know what to say to those people who blame God or they don’t know how to respond to other questions. This guide provides a way for Christians to talk with each other, understand different perspectives and begin to formulate faithful answers that make sense to each individual.
This program has four basic sessions. It is designed for sessions lasting 45-50 minutes, so it could work well for Sunday School or mid-week sessions. If you choose to use it as a Lenten study, you may wish to add the two Lent related sessions. A copy of the adult version of this program is included with this resource.
The sessions are:
- Why do bad things happen to good people?
- Why doesn’t God prevent disasters?
- Why Haiti? (an overview of Haitian life and history)
- Where is God in Haiti (or any disaster)?
- Where was God in Christ’s crucifixion?
- What is on the other side of crucifixion….or disasters?
