Searching for God in the Rubble of Haiti

This program is designed to assist adults in talking about why bad things happen to good people. When disasters occur, such as the recent earthquake in Haiti many people wonder why God allowed this to happen and some even wonder if God caused it to happen. Others are confident that God doesn't cause earthquakes, but they don’t know what to say to people who blame God or they don’t know how to respond to other people’s questions.

Haitians in this tragedy are probably looking for answers about God in the rubble too, and using not only their Christian sensibilities (85% claim Christian beliefs) but a significant amount of the population also practice Voodoo, often alongside their Christian faith. There is also a small community of Muslims in Port au Prince. We are all trying to make sense of what has happened, and what our faith has to do with it.

This guide provides a way for Christians to talk with each other, understand the different perspectives and begin to formulate answers that make sense to each individual. This program has four basic sessions. It is designed for a Sunday morning adult education forum of about 50 minutes or, if you wish to have more extensive discussion, it can be used for evening 1 ½ hr. sessions. If you choose to use it as a Lenten study, you may wish to add the two Lent-related sessions, also included in this resource. A free youth version of this program is included as part of this program.

The sessions are:

  1. Why do bad things happen to good people
  2. Why doesn’t God prevent disasters?
  3. Why Haiti? (an overview of Haitian life and history)
  4. Where is God in Haiti (or any disaster)?
  5. Where was God in Christ’s crucifixion? ….or disasters?
  6. What is on the other side of crucifixion?
